The Cape Verdean people are incredibly resilient, overcoming many challenges to build a strong community and unique culture.
Cape Verde was the first slave society globally, where the number of slaves exceeded the number of free citizens. Cape Verdeans survived slavery, acculturation, and various famines and plagues that devastated the population.
Today, we show our strength and determination. We have a free country, though with some economic limitations. Our children now have access to education, more opportunities for social mobility, and most importantly: freedom and respect.
Today is a day to remember that "caminhe ê pa frente" 💪🏾, never forgetting our past struggles and pains.
